Banksy shred v. Jenny Saville triumph

Incase you missed it… Last night, after selling for £1,042,000 Girl With Balloon by Banksy, started self shredding at Sotheby’s, London. In a move that could quite as easily have been a bizarre plot twist in a Mission Impossible film, the piece began to ‘self destruct’ as the final hammer came down. Alarms went off and staff took the painting away. Oh, the drama.

Unfortunately this publicity stunt overshadowed another rather momentous moment. Jenny Saville’s self portrait: Propped, sold for £9,500,000. The highest auction record for any artwork by a living female artist. Hurrah! Well done.

Now, I’m not a raging feminist but as a woman in the arts, I do like to see, take notice and celebrate these little milestones.

I was lucky enough to see this piece up close, as part of an exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh last month (see above pic). Today I will celebrate with tea and cake, well done Jenny!
